The University of Memphis (UofM) is a research university located in Tennessee. It has roots dating back to 1912, yet it only became the university it is today in 1994.
The picturesque 1,160-acre campus is approximately five miles east of downtown in the University District neighbourhood of east Memphis. This makes it an ideal location for students wishing to explore the surrounding area.
The university is the flagship institution of the Tennessee Board of Regents system.
UofM is comprised of a number of different colleges and schools, which include: College of Arts and Sciences, Fogelman College of Business and Economics, Herff College of Engineering, Loewenberg College of Nursing, and the School of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.
Moreover, the university hosts several centres of advanced research, which conducts research in a variety of subjects, which include ecology, environmental biology and natural history.
In recent years, the campus has significantly increased the amount of green space and walkways over the past several years. As it is based in a historic neighbourhood, planners are maintaining a focus on its original historic architecture.
Media has a strong presence on campus. The Daily Helmsman is the student newspaper on campus which is student written and produced. It publishes an impressive 5,500 copies a day across four days of the week, while employing a paid staff of more than 30.
The university has accumulated a vast array of traditions over its long history. The Mighty Sound of the South Band is the university's band, and they now perform at all of the university football games.
Notable alumni include Derrick Martell Rose, an American professional basketball player for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association, Dixie Carter, an American film, television and stage actress, who was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role on Desperate Housewives, and Mulgrew Miller, a renowned jazz pianist.
